Senbon-zuki (thousand-pestle rice cake pounding) is held every year on January 2 and 3 at Mizuma-dera Temple in Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture, and is a traditional event designated as an intangible folk cultural property of Kaizuka City. The wakachu, eldest sons of each household in the Mizuma area, wear white happi coats and maroon hakama and pound the rice cakes. The origin dates back to the Tenpyo era (729–749), when the monk Gyoki founded Mizuma-dera and pounded rice cakes together with 16 young attendants as an offering. Within the temple grounds, the rice-cake-pounding song "Minakami wa kiyoki nagare no Mizuma-dera tsuretsure" and the call "A, yoiyase" resound, announcing the start of the new year. From 2:00 p.m., a mochimaki (rice cake toss) is also held, scattering coins and auspicious rice cakes to the worshippers, and those attending celebrate the arrival of the new year.
