This policy sets out how we handle your information in Wasshoi, our Japanese festival guide (the “app”). By using the app you agree to this policy.
1. Accounts and signing in
The main features of the app — browsing festivals, the map, the calendar, search, saving favourites and reminders before a festival starts — work without an account. Signing in with Apple, Google or LINE is required only for a few features, such as adding a festival or suggesting a correction. When you sign in we receive a user identifier, email address and display name from that provider and store them on our authentication platform, run by Supabase, Inc. LINE does not give us an email address, and if you choose “Hide My Email” with Apple we store Apple’s relay address instead of your own. Festival additions and corrections you submit are stored so we can review and publish them. You can delete all of this at any time using the method in section 8.
2. What we collect and use
To provide and improve the app we handle the following. (1) Usage data (analytics): through PostHog we collect which screens you view and what you tap, your device type and OS version, an approximate region estimated from your IP address, and an anonymous per-device identifier. Microsoft Clarity additionally records heatmaps and session replays in both the app and on the website: a reconstruction of the taps, scrolls and movement on a screen, used to see where we are confusing people. Text you type into form fields is masked and not recorded. None of it is linked to information that identifies you personally. (2) Location, which is optional and processed on your device (section 3). (3) Favourites and settings, which are stored only on your device and never sent to our servers. (4) Reminders, which are local notifications (section 4).
3. Location
Location is used onlyto find and order festivals near you, in the “Near you” feature and the locate button on the map. The coordinates are processed on your device only and are never sent to our servers or to anyone else. Sharing your location is optional, and every other feature works normally if you decline. You can change or withdraw permission at any time in the iOS Settings app.
4. Reminders
If you allow notifications, we schedule a local reminder on your device for festivals you have saved, so you hear about them before they start. This version sends no remote push notifications from our servers, and we do not collect or store a push token. You can turn notifications off at any time in the iOS Settings app.
5. Why we use it
To provide, maintain and improve the app and to find faults in it; to understand how it is used so we can improve what it shows; and to show festivals near you, if you have allowed location.
6. Links to other services, including affiliate links
The app and this site contain links to other services for accommodation, experiences, transport and goods, some of which are affiliate links. Following one takes you away from Wasshoi, and the privacy policy of that service applies once you arrive. We are not responsible for how those services handle your information.
7. Third parties and analytics
Usage data is processed by PostHog, Inc., and by Microsoft Corporation through Microsoft Clarity. Account information and anything you submit is stored and processed on our backend platform, run by Supabase, Inc. We do not share your information with anyone else except where the law requires it, and we never sell it for advertising. We do not carry out cross-app or cross-site advertising tracking, and we do not use the advertising identifier.
8. Keeping, deleting and opting out
Everything held on your device — favourites, settings and scheduled reminders — is erased when you delete the app, or from Profile → Delete all data inside it. If you have signed in and created an account, Profile → Delete account permanently removes the account information on our servers (user identifier, email address and display name) along with anything you submitted. For questions about analytics data, or to have it removed, write to us at the address in section 11.
9. Children’s privacy
The app does not set out to collect personal information from any particular age group. Children should use it under the supervision of a parent or guardian.
10. Changes to this policy
We may revise this policy as the law changes or as we add features to the app. We will announce any significant change in the app or on this page.
