Sumiyoshi no Otaue is a rice-planting ritual held every year on June 14 at Sumiyoshi Taisha in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, to pray for a bountiful harvest of the five grains. Strictly transmitted in the middle of the city, it is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and is known as the Otaue Festival. According to tradition, it began when Empress Jingu, at the time of the enshrinement of Sumiyoshi Taisha, established a new field as an offering field for the Sumiyoshi deity and summoned planting maidens from Nagato Province (present-day Yamaguchi Prefecture). It appears in records from the Kamakura period, survived the crisis of abolition during the Meiji Restoration, and was designated a nationally Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1979. On the day, a report ceremony is held at the First Main Shrine, and musicians, yaotome (eight maidens), planting maidens, substitute planting maidens, chigo (child attendants), furyu musha (decorated warriors), and dancers of Sumiyoshi Odori form a procession and head to the sacred field. In the field purified with sacred water, young rice seedlings are exchanged, and along with the planting, various performing arts are offered, including the Yaotome Mai by the yaotome, the bo-uchi gassen (staff-fighting match) by the furyu musha, and the Sumiyoshi Odori by local children. The Sumiyoshi Odori is especially famous for the dancers forming the character for "heart" as they dance, and it is performed when the planting of the sacred field is completed.
