The Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri, known as the Kishiwada Autumn Festival, is an autumn festival in which each town pulls danjiri (festival floats) around the area centered on Kishiwada Castle in Kishiwada City, Osaka Prefecture. It is said to have begun in 1703 during the mid-Edo period as a prayer for a bountiful harvest, and since then it has been carefully passed down by local people for about 300 years. The main attraction is the "yarimawashi." About 500 pullers turn a roughly 4-ton danjiri at a right angle without slowing down. The gallant sight of them moving all at once in response to the instructions of the "daikugata" on the roof is impressive. At night, "hiirei junkai" is held, in which the floats are decorated with about 200 lanterns, showing a beautiful appearance different from the daytime. There is also the pleasure of comparing the detailed carvings of historical figures and sacred beasts on each town's danjiri.
