The Haruki Danjiri Matsuri is held every September in the Haruki district of northern Kishiwada, Osaka Prefecture. Centered around Haruki Station on the Nankai Main Line, it takes place on the same day as the Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri held in the same city. Twelve neighborhood associations, including Haruki Honmachi, Haruki Nakamachi, and Haruki Oshoji, pull 'shimo danjiri' — Kishiwada-style danjiri (festival floats) — parading mainly around the old Kishu Kaido road. The festival's origins lie in a 'competition' between two danjiri from the landward and seaward sides of Haruki Village. After a period of dissolution in the 1950s, it later revived with children's danjiri and new floats purchased by neighborhood associations, growing to the current system of twelve floats. The highlight is the 'yarimawashi' — a sharp right-angle turn made at speed with a float of all-keyaki construction weighing over four tons — where the coordination of the front lever, rear lever, and carpenter is a test of skill. The festival begins with a test run on the first Sunday of September, with the main two-day festival held the Sunday before Respect for the Aged Day. During the day, you can enjoy parades and the procession into Yasaka Shrine; at night, the 'toirei eigyo' (lantern-lit parade) illuminated by red komagata lanterns.
