On March 25 every year, the Nane Gogu Taisai is held at Domyoji Tenmangu Shrine in Fujiidera, Osaka. The date corresponds to the old lunar February 25, the anniversary of Sugawara no Michizane's death, adjusted to the modern calendar, and it has long been known as the 'Kawachi spring event,' a spring Shinto rite. Its origin dates back to 899. On his way to being exiled to Dazaifu, Michizane visited this area, where rapeseed flowers were blooming around him. After his departure, his aunt, the nun Kakuju, made rice from his tray into powder and formed it into yellow dumplings shaped like plum fruit; these were said to have healing efficacy, and before long the event became established as a festival heralding spring. On the day, a chigo procession is held from 1 p.m., rapeseed flowers are offered, and there is also a special display of Sugawara no Michizane's belongings and a distribution of nane gogu with prizes. From the 24th to the 26th, including the day before, traditional rapeseed-colored dumplings are distributed.
