The Yassai Hossai Festival is held every year on December 14 at Ishizu Tai Shrine in Nishi Ward, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture. Designated an intangible folk cultural property of Sakai City, it is known as a strange festival based on a legend of helping Ebisu, and has been passed down in the community as a brave naked fire festival. The central event is an ancient rite in which a huge pile of firewood is burned and participants walk over the fire to the chant of "Yassai Hossai." On a winter night, as the flames flare up fanned by strong winds, attendees can watch the traditional ritual up close amid the intense heat. It is also said that taking home the leftover embers of the bonfire wards off evil, and a custom remains in which worshippers take them home to pray for a safe year. As a traditional event announcing the year's end in Sakai, it is still deeply rooted in the community.
