A summer festival held every year on August 4 and 5, centered on Yaegaki Shrine in Sosa, Chiba Prefecture. Mikoshi (portable shrines) from 10 neighborhoods come out and parade to the sound of the Mikawa-bayashi music of flutes and drums. Highlights are the custom of throwing cold water on the procession of mikoshi as they set out amid the calls of "Anrya doshita," and the mikoshi carried only by women, which is rare nationwide. The shrine's festival is said to have begun in 1530 (Kyoroku 3), giving it about 500 years of history. Its origin as a Gion festival is thought to date to around 1697 (Genroku 10); mikoshi came to be carried in 1713 (Shotoku 3), and from the Taisho era a joint mikoshi procession has been held to foster harmony between the neighborhoods. In the joint procession on the 5th, 10 mikoshi depart from Yokaichiba Elementary School, and after 3:30 p.m., as they approach Yaegaki Shrine, the carriers put on a particularly vigorous procession. This festival is registered as a Chiba Cultural Asset that people want to pass on to the next generation.
