The Ohara Hadaka Matsuri is held every year on September 23 and 24 in Isumi, Chiba Prefecture, and is a festival in which shrines from 18 shrines across the three districts of Ohara, Tokai, and Naniwa present mikoshi (portable shrines). There is no detailed documentary evidence establishing its origin, but Ohama Hachiman Shrine has a tradition of Bunshu dating to 1145, suggesting it may go back to the Heian period. The mikoshi of Kaizuka Kashima Shrine also bears an ink inscription from the third year of Jokyo (1686), indicating a history of more than 300 years. The main event on the first day is "Shiofumi," in which more than a dozen mikoshi enter the Pacific Ocean from Ohara Beach and jostle and throw one another. A ceremony praying for a bountiful harvest and a large catch, along with a two-arrow release ritual by the mayor, is also held. On the second day, the mikoshi gather at Ohara Hachiman Shrine, process through the Ohara Central Shopping Street, and then hold a "Daiwakare-shiki" (grand farewell ceremony) in the schoolyard of Ohara Elementary School. At the signal of fireworks, the mikoshi run, sing a farewell song, and return to their respective shrines.
