Narita no Odori Hanami is a traditional event held in spring at Naritasan Shinshoji Temple and around the former Narita town area in Narita City, Chiba Prefecture. Led mainly by women from the seven districts of the former Narita village, participants offer dances to the deities and Buddhas. Designated a Chiba Prefectural Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1964, it announces the arrival of spring in this historic temple town. The festival has continued since the Genroku era, about 300 years ago, and carries the meaning of comforting the deities and Buddhas and praying for the end of epidemics and a bountiful harvest. The ancient-style Miroku Odori is performed solemnly and lively to the sound of drums and the singers' lyrics. The seven districts of Higashimachi, Honmachi, Nakamachi, Kamimachi, Saiwaicho, Hanasakicho, and Tamachi take turns as the annual organizer, offering dances and paying respects before 16 deities and Buddhas. It is easily accessible, about 1 minute on foot from JR Narita Station or Keisei Narita Station, and can be viewed free of charge.
