The festival was planned by local volunteers to unite residents divided over the Narita Airport issue, and was first held on October 31, 1982. It is now positioned as a town revitalization event, featuring ceremonies and parades by "ancient people" inspired by the kofun (burial mound) clusters and haniwa (clay figures).

Getting there

The nearest station is Shibayama-Chiyoda Station on the Keisei Main Line. From the station it is about a 15-minute walk, or there is a Shibayama Town loop bus bound for the haniwa festival venue. By car, it is about 5 minutes from Shibayama IC on the Higashi-Kanto Expressway. There is a free temporary parking lot.
