The Yabusame Festival is held at Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture, every year from May 4 to 6. It is an ancient festival with over 800 years of history, and solemn Shinto rituals take place on the cherry blossom riding ground within the shrine grounds. On May 5, the main festival day, the Yabusame Festival is held at the main hall at 9:00 AM, and from noon a procession of Shinto priests, warriors, and young attendants parades through the city. From 3:00 PM, on the cherry blossom riding ground within the shrine grounds, archers dressed in Kamakura warrior hunting attire perform the Ogasawara-ryu Shinto Yabusame. This solemn and powerful ceremonial archery, which preserves ancient martial arts to this day, is the highlight of the festival.
