The Enshu Hamakita Hiryu Festival is a local festival held on the first Saturday and Sunday of June each year, with the Nakase Ryokuchi area on the Tenryu River in Hamana Ward, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, as its main venue. Since it began in 1991, free shuttle buses have run from Hamakita Station and Nishi-Kashima Station, making it easy to get there. The predecessor of this festival was the Hamakita Festival, which started in 1974. At the time there were few festivals in Hamakita City, and after a change of timing to June, the first edition under the current name was held in 1991. From 1998 the venue was moved to the Nakase Ryokuchi area on the Tenryu River and the festival became a two-day event, and from 2001 it has also been held in parallel at the Nayuta Hamakita venue. On the main venue on the riverbed on the west bank of the Tenryu River, events include the large kite flying of the Hamakita kite, which is unique to the Hamakita area and different from the Hamamatsu Festival, a fire festival using a dragon symbol more than 5 m long, fireworks, Enshu Dainenbutsu, and neri. At the Nayuta Hamakita venue, Japanese drum performances and Yosakoi dances are presented, and different events can be enjoyed at the two venues.
