Fujisan Goshinka Matsuri is held in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture, on the first Saturday of August every year. In this festival, fire kindled at the summit of Mount Fuji is placed in a mikoshi (portable shrine) and carried in a procession. The fire is offered at Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine, and the various events in the city center revolve around this fire. On the day before the festival, a fire-kindling ceremony is held at the summit of Mount Fuji by the climbing group, and the lit fire is brought down to the city. After it is offered at Sengen Taisha Shrine, the full festival begins. On the day itself, events including a lighting ceremony, a parade, drum performances, and the Goshinka Ondo dance are held. In particular, the Kanda River Ascent, in which many people proceed through the Kanda River together with the mikoshi, is known as a highlight of the festival and is its closing event.
