31 days to go
Rooms around Shimoda, Shizuoka fill up while the festival is on.
On August 14 and 15, in the old town area of Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture, the Shimoda Taiko Festival is held as the annual festival of Hachimangu Shrine, the local tutelary shrine. Mikoshi (portable shrines), attendant gear, and taiko floats set out from Hachimangu Shrine one after another into the town, parading through the streets all day to the sound of flutes, shamisen, and drums. It is a summer tradition that comes alive over the two days of Obon. The highlights of this festival include powerful performances such as the taiko-bashi and soroi-uchi, as well as the passionate playing by Shimoda children that seems to fill the streets. Listeners are naturally drawn in by the bursting atmosphere. On the night of the 14th, a summer evening fireworks display is held at the Takegahama reclaimed land (near Roadside Station Kaikoku Shimoda Minato), coloring the summer night.
