The Warabi Hadaka Matsuri is held every year on February 25 at Koso Shrine in Yotsukaido, Chiba Prefecture, and is a traditional event praying for a good harvest and protection from misfortune. Also known by the nickname Doronko Matsuri (Mud Festival), general viewing is possible from 1:00 p.m. The shrine traces its history to the Dairokuten Sha that once stood in Warabi Aza Nakayama, where Takamimusubi no Okami was enshrined together during the Meiji-period separation of Shinto and Buddhism, continuing to the present. It is said that in ancient times, Dairokuten was ceremonially transferred from Katori's Yamakura Daijin, founded in the 2nd year of Konin (811), and it has inherited the faith of the local area. The festival begins with a Shinto ritual for a bountiful harvest, in which naked participants perform a "rice planting" in the sacred paddy, using the straw of a shimenawa (sacred rope) as rice plants. After that, there is a "toddler ritual" in which mud is applied to the foreheads of infants under one year old, followed by horseback fighting and mud throwing, and finally the shrine's representatives are tossed into the air, bringing the event to a close. It is a powerful festival where even spectators can end up covered in mud.
