The Uso-kae Shinji (lie-swapping ritual) is held annually at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine on January 24 and 25. It is a traditional event in Kita Ward, Osaka, in which participants apologize before the deities for the "lies" of the previous year and exchange them for "truth." On the day of the ritual, worshippers are handed a bag containing an "uso mamori" (lie charm). At the sound of drums echoing through the shrine grounds, participants exchange charms while chanting, "Let us swap lies for truth, swap, swap." The moment the drums stop, they open the bag, and depending on the mark inside, they receive a gold, silver, or wooden uso mamori. Those who receive a charm are said to have good fortune that year, and the ritual has been passed down as a shrine event at Osaka Tenmangu welcoming the new year.
