Ubarano Daimyo Gyoretsu is held every year on the fourth Saturday of July in Ubara, Katsuura City, Chiba Prefecture. It is the annual festival of Yasaka Shrine, organized by the Ubara Daimyo Gyoretsu Preservation and Transmission Association, and is a Chiba Prefecture Record-Selected Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Locally it is affectionately called "Machi," and as a source of pride for the fishermen, it is talked about throughout the year. The festival is said to have begun about 400 years ago, modeled after a daimyo procession that visited Tsushima Shrine in Kishu and Owari, and the weapons are said to have been received from Honda Tadatomo, lord of the Otaki Domain. It conveys to the present the history of Ubara, where fishermen who moved from Kishu brought advanced techniques and later built Yasaka Shrine as a guardian deity. The daimyo procession and mikoshi (portable shrine) depart from Yasaka Shrine and parade through the town and along Ubara Beach with the call of "Yoi, yoi, yoiyamakase." In the "Hamadori" (beach descent), a major highlight, the mikoshi heads toward the sea, and a spirited display is performed in front of the first torii gate of Yasaka Shrine, "Kishune." At the climax of the festival, which continues until late at night, there is a custom of violently lifting the previous generation's mikoshi within the worship hall, and with excess momentum, breaking through the ceiling.
