Tsukimi Matsuri is an autumn festival (a grand festival) held at Mozu Hachimangu Shrine in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, on the 15th day of the eighth month of the old lunar calendar. Because it falls on the mid-autumn full moon, it is called Tsukimi Matsuri, and it has long been familiar to the Sakai and Senshu areas. The festival is said to have arisen from a blending of prayers for a good harvest as the rice ripens, the Hojoe rite handed down at Hachimangu Shrine, and the custom of celebrating the full moon. Its highlight is the futon-daiko offering rite held on the Saturday and Sunday around the grand festival. One large and one small drum are offered from each of the nine shrine parish towns, and the imposing drums, about 4 meters tall and about 2 tons in weight, are carried by about 60 to 70 people and paraded through the shrine grounds. In the Hojoe rite performed by chigo, young children, a Shinto ceremony is held in which small fish are released into the shrine's Hojoe Pond to pray for the growth of living creatures.
