Tokae, held at Imamiya Ebisu Shrine every year from January 9 to 11, is a regular festival honoring Ebisu, the deity of prosperous business. The shrine, located in Naniwa Ward, Osaka, traces its origin to Prince Shotoku, who enshrined it as the guardian deity of the west when he founded Shitenno-ji Temple, and today it is one of Osaka's leading New Year's visit spots, drawing about one million worshippers a year. The three-day schedule centers on January 10, called Hon'ebisu, with the preceding day as Yoiebisu and the following day as Nokoriebisu. The Hoekago Parade, which originates from geisha of Osaka's Minami district who once rode in gorgeous palanquins to worship on behalf of their patrons and pray for prosperous business, is still a main attraction seen around the Ebisubashi-suji shopping street. Worshippers receive auspicious items such as lucky bamboo branches and rakes, and also receive service from fukumusume (lucky maidens).
