The Furusato Jidai Matsuri (Hassaku Matsuri), held every September in Tsuru City, Yamanashi Prefecture, is a seasonal marker of autumn in the area. Centered on the grounds of Tsuru City Yanimura Daiichi Elementary School and organized by the Furusato Jidai Matsuri Executive Committee, it consists of a yoimatsuri (eve festival) and a honmatsuri (main festival day). The festival has a long history and will mark its 42nd edition in Reiwa 8. The Hassaku yatai (festival floats) are said to have been made in the Bunka era of the Edo period and are designated tangible cultural properties of Tsuru City. They are preserved in four districts — Hayabamachi, Shimomachi, Shinmachi, and Nakamachi — and are lavishly decorated with hanging curtains by ukiyo-e artists such as Katsushika Hokusai and Toribushisai Fujiwara Eiyoshi. Highlights include a daimyo procession in Edo-period costume and the dynamic pulling of the four districts' Hassaku yatai through the streets. A local performing arts stage and a yoimatsuri market are also held, drawing many visitors from inside and outside the city.
