Every year on April 22, Shoryoe is held at Shitenno-ji, the head temple of the Wason sect in Tennoji Ward, Osaka. It is the most important and largest Buddhist memorial service among the temple's observances commemorating the anniversary of Prince Shotoku's death, and is solemnly offered at the stone stage of Rokuji-do from 12:30 pm. This grand memorial service, with a history of 1,400 years, preserves to this day the form of an ancient ritual combining a Buddhist chant service by the Shitenno-ji Issan ritual priests and bugaku (court dance and music) by the Tennoji Gakuso. A particular highlight is the bugaku of the Shitenno-ji Shoryoe, designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. The performance, reminiscent of a gorgeously colorful picture scroll, can be viewed for free, and a live stream is also held on the day.
