The Shinnō Festival is held over two days every year on November 22 and 23 at Sukunahikona Shrine (commonly known as Shinnō-san) in Doshomachi, Chuo Ward, Osaka. It is designated an Osaka City intangible cultural property (folk event). It is said that Osaka's festivals begin with Ebessan and end with Shinnō-san, and it is also called the Tome no Matsuri. The festival traces its origins to 1822 (Bunsei 5), when cholera spread in Osaka and a group of drug merchants compounded a medicinal remedy called Kotō Sakki Uōen, and, together with paper-mache tiger charms called Shinko, administered it after praying before the shrine deities. Even today, charms consisting of a paper-mache tiger and a Sukunahikona Shrine talisman attached to a five-leaf bamboo branch are given out with prayers for household safety and freedom from illness. Since crowds are expected around 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., visiting after 4:00 p.m., when it is relatively less crowded, is recommended.
