Otaue Shinji, held on June 14 at the "Otada" rice field within Sumiyoshi Taisha in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka City, is a Shinto ritual designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, performed to pray for a bountiful rice harvest. It is an agricultural rite continued since ancient times, and many people gather along the ridges of the sacred rice field. On the day, events include the actual planting by the Kaeue-me, the Ta-mai dance of the Yaotome, the Kandai-mai dance of the Mitoshi-me, the Furyu Musha Gyōji, the Bōuchi Gassen, the Taue-mai, the Sumiyoshi Odori, and the dedication of the Sai-gyū, among others. These traditional performances are said to convey the rich rice-growing culture that could be called the original landscape of the Japanese people, and they captivate viewers.
