Mamada no Jagamaita, held in the Mamada district of Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a traditional event dating back to the Edo period and designated as a nationally important intangible folk cultural property. The grounds of Mamada Hachimangu Shrine and the surrounding neighborhoods serve as the venue, making it a festival deeply rooted in the local community. It originally began as an event to pray for a bountiful harvest and the warding off of epidemics, and has been passed down by the people of Mamada over many years. A particular highlight is the "katsugidashi," in which seven distinctive snakes (ja), each 15 meters long, parade through the town. After a purification ceremony and opening ceremony, a water-drinking rite is held from noon, and the snakes proceed through each neighborhood. The gallant sight of the large snakes parading is known as a local seasonal feature that colors early summer in Mamada.
