Do-sai (Hijisai) is a participatory art event held at various locations around Mashiko Town in Tochigi Prefecture. Organized by the Do-sai Executive Committee and co-hosted by Mashiko Town, the main festival takes place once every three years, running for about two weeks from the new moon to the full moon in September. Launched in 2009, the event was started by then-Mayor Tomoyuki Otsuka, together with brand producer Tsuneo Nari and Hiroshi Baba and others, as a town revitalization effort making use of Mashiko's resources amid the fiscal austerity following the Heisei-era municipal mergers. It focuses on "earth" (tsuchi), the foundation of Mashiko ware pottery and agriculture, and was named after the ancient term "hiji." During the festival, art exhibitions, workshops, music live performances, and more take place around the town, including the symbolic "Do Butai" (earth stage), the "Asaichi" (morning market) and "Yuyake Bar" (sunset bar) where local ingredients can be enjoyed, and the Do Music Festival. In the year before the main event, a preview event called "Pre-Do-sai" is also held, offering a way to experience Mashiko's natural and cultural environment.
