Held in Mashiko Town, Haga District, Tochigi Prefecture, for three days each year from July 23 to 25, this festival is a rite of the Yasaka Shrine, a subordinate shrine within the grounds of Kashima Shrine. The Sake Offering Ceremony held on July 24, the middle day, is counted among the three great strange festivals of the Kanto region, and the festival is a grand one in which yamaboko (festival floats) from each district take part and parade through the streets.
Getting there
About 10 minutes on foot from Mashiko Station on the Moka Railway. Alternatively, about 70 minutes by Kanto Bus bound for Mashiko from JR Utsunomiya Station, getting off at Kashima Shrine-mae. By car, about 20 minutes from the Sakurakawa-Chikusei IC and about 25 minutes from the Moka IC on the Kita-Kanto Expressway.
