The Kumata Shrine Summer Festival is held over four days every year from July 11 to 14 at Kumata Shrine in Hirano Ward, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture. Nine danjiri (festival floats) are pulled through the streets, and the festival is known as one of the largest in Osaka, drawing crowds of more than 300,000 people annually. The festival's origins date back to a Gion-e held in the early Heian period to quell epidemics and natural disasters. From the mid-Edo period it took its present form, with mikoshi (portable shrine), taikodai (drum floats), and danjiri as its attractions, and it combines the "shrine festival," centered on the procession of the mikoshi carrying the deity Susanoo no Mikoto, with the "townspeople's festival," in which nine neighborhoods repay the deity's blessings with the bustle of their danjiri, conveying to the present a spirit of prayer for the safety and health of the community. Highlights include the "Nine Neighborhood Joint Procession" on the night of the 12th, when nine danjiri gather on Minamiko-dori, and the "danjiri shrine entry" on the night of the 13th, when the nine neighborhoods' danjiri proceed one after another to the shrine over about four and a half hours. In addition, various Shinto rituals are held over the four days, including the taikodai drum floats, the "kamishoki" performed in darkness, and the "Otabyo Festival" on the 14th.
