Kagami-biraki Kayuura Shinji is a traditional Shinto ritual held at Hiraoka Shrine in Higashiosaka, Osaka, around January 9 to 11. Praying for good health in the new year and a bountiful harvest, participants eat kagami-biraki mochi (rice cakes cut and served in zoni soup) and then perform kayu-ura (porridge divination) to foretell the year's fortunes. In the ritual, azuki porridge is cooked, and the way it cooks and its taste are used to divine the crop conditions and the state of society; visitors may also be served the porridge.
