The Hanatsumi Festival is held in mid-April at Otoritaisha Shrine in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture. It is an ancient-style rite that adds color to the spring flower season. Organized by Otoritaisha Shrine, the festival is held together with the arrival of vibrant spring and carries on the traditions of Sakai to the present day. The festival's origins date back to the Heian period, when it is said to have begun as a prayer for freedom from illness. Over its long history, the devotional spirit wishing for people's health has been passed down through the generations without change. Today, the Hanatsumi Festival is served by people called hanatsumi-me, and the customs handed down from ancient times are carefully preserved. The solemn spectacle of the festival held within the shrine grounds in spring is a highlight that lets visiting worshippers feel the changing of the seasons and the weight of history.
