The Ura Mizushugishiki is a traditional event held at Sumiyoshi Shrine in Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture. Its detailed history and origins are unknown, but it has long been passed down as a Shinto ritual honoring the local water deity and praying for a good harvest and safety. The highlight is the "mizushugi" ceremony, in which priests and parishioners carry a mikoshi (portable shrine) from Sumiyoshi Shrine toward the sea or river, where a purification rite is performed at the water's edge. The sight of water spraying up amid bold shouts is impressive, and crowds of onlookers gather.
