Doyadoya is an annual event held every year on January 14 at Shitenno-ji Temple, the head temple of the Washu sect in Osaka City, and is known as one of Japan's three great strange festivals. This day marks the concluding day of the Shusho-e service that begins on New Year's Day; after the Buddhist rites inside the hall, doyadoya is carried out in front of the hall. After the rites, visitors are given goo-hoin yangzhi branches and Shusho-e prayer talismans at the Sairakusha. Also, in front of the Nio-mon Gate, the Shitenno-ji Tondo-yaki is held from 9:00 a.m. to around 1:00 p.m., where New Year's decorations, shimenawa ropes, talismans, and amulets can be brought and burned free of charge.
