Rooms around Atami, Shizuoka fill up while the festival is on.
The Atami Baien Ume Matsuri is held at Atami Baien in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and is a winter event for enjoying Japan's earliest-blooming plum blossoms. The garden, opened in 1886, contains 469 plum trees of 60 varieties, including old trees over 100 years old. Each year the first blossoms open from late November to early December, and since early, mid, and late varieties bloom in sequence, the plum blossoms can be enjoyed over a long period. During the event, foot baths and souvenir shops open in the garden, and daily events such as the Atami Geisha Association performance, street performers, and song shows are held. On Sundays and holidays, free amazake and plum tea are served, and free garden guides by the Atami Machiaruki Guide Association are also provided every day. Along with viewing the plum blossoms, there are events where visitors can experience Atami's culture and warmth.
