At Suigo Sawara Ayame Park in Katori, Chiba Prefecture, the Suigo Sawara Ayame Festival is held when the iris flowers are at their best. The roughly 8-hectare park contains about 1.5 million iris plants of around 400 varieties, with diverse flowers such as the Edo, Ise, and Higo strains blooming in competition. Until the 1950s, this area had a wedding culture unique to the water town, in which a bride would travel by boat to her husband's home carrying her trousseau. At the festival, the "yomeiri-bune" (bridal boat) reenacts this custom, with a couple in Japanese dress traveling by boat along the park's waterways. A highlight is the park boat tour by "sappa-bune", from which visitors can view irises, water lilies, and lotus up close from a different perspective than on land. During the period, performances by a Dutch brass band and local junior high school students presenting local performing arts are also held, allowing visitors to enjoy the flowers and the culture of the water town.
