Osako's Sagicho is a fire festival for Saenokami (Doso-shin, a roadside deity) held at Kitahama Beach in Osako Town, Kanagawa Prefecture. Also called Saetobarae or Dondoyaki, it is designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Its origin traces back to a story in which an evil deity called Hitotsu-me Kozo (One-Eyed Boy) was writing down the villagers' deeds in a ledger, but at daybreak hurriedly entrusted it to Saenokami and went away; at a loss, Saenokami burned the ledger along with the house. On the day of the festival, the Onbe-dake and Okariya set up in various places around the town are taken down, and the collected decorations and lucky items are carried to the beach to build nine cone-shaped sites. When fire is lit after dark, customs remain such as roasting and eating dumplings, burning New Year's calligraphy, and taking home charred pine sticks to place on roofs as a charm against colds and fires.
