The Ooka Echizen Festival is held every year in mid-April, on Saturday and Sunday, in Chigasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It commemorates the virtue of Ooka Tadasuke, a renowned magistrate of the Edo period. The venues are Jokonji Temple, the family temple of the Ooka clan, and the area around Chigasaki Station, and the festival is run mainly by local residents. The Ooka family ruled Tsutsumi Village, Koza District, Sagami Province (present-day Tsutsumi, Chigasaki City), and Tadasuke was its fifth head. The festival originated in 1911 (Meiji 44), when Tadasuke was posthumously granted the Junior Fourth Rank, and the following year, 1912 (Taisho 1), a commemorative ceremony was held at his grave at Jokonji Temple. It was later interrupted by the Great Kanto Earthquake and the war, but resumed in 1956 (Showa 31) under the name Ooka Echizen Festival. The festival runs for two days. On Saturday, a memorial service at the grave and a local festival are held at Jokonji Temple. On Sunday, a parade is held around Chigasaki Station, with baton girls, fife and drum corps, kiyari, chigo procession, tekoya, the Echizen procession, festival music, and mikoshi (portable shrines) enlivening the city.
