The Tsurumi no Ta Matsuri (Tsurumi Field Festival) is held every year on April 29 at Tsurumi Shrine in Tsurumi Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, and is the oldest folk performing art in the city of Yokohama. It is a type of ta-asobi (field play), a pre-harvest ritual praying for a bountiful harvest of the five grains and the prosperity of descendants, and is passed down by the Tsurumi Ta Matsuri Preservation Society. The festival was transmitted since the Kamakura period as the rite of Sugiyama Myojin, the former name of Tsurumi Shrine, but it was discontinued in 1871 (Meiji 4). In the 1980s, research to restore it based on old documents such as "Chigusa" progressed, and it was revived in 1987. It is now registered as a Yokohama City Regional Intangible Folk Cultural Property. On the day, starting with the Sugiyama Festival at 4 p.m., the Hikime no Gi and Shinjuka are performed. Twelve ritual attendants carry hoes and perform the movements from field plowing to rice harvesting on a stage representing a rice field called Yassai, and in the final part, the comic characters Oturu and Kamezo perform a sympathetic magic. Food stalls and a mikoshi (portable shrine) parade are also held, and the area bustles with local people.
