The Nagoshi Festival (chinowa-kuguri) is a traditional event held every year at Washinomiya Shrine in Kuki, Saitama Prefecture. It has long been known as "Washi no nagoshi" or "wa-kuguri," and involves transferring impurity to a paper katashiro (effigy) and praying for health through the summer. On the day, a large chinowa (thatched ring) three meters in diameter is placed in front of the shrine building, and passing through it is believed to ward off misfortune. In the evening, the katashiro are carried in an old-style procession to the nearby Kori River, where gagaku music and dance are offered on the riverbank, after which the katashiro are set afloat from a boat in the "katashiro-nagashi" rite. During the day, performances of Washinomiya Saibara Kagura, designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, can be seen at the kagura hall.
