The Magariue Traditional Dohyo-iri is a traditional event passed down in the Magariue district of Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture. It is held each year in conjunction with the spring regular festival and is dedicated at a local Shrine. Its origins are said to date back to the Edo period, and it is told that it began as a prayer for a bountiful harvest of the five grains and for good health by offering sumo as a Shinto ritual. The highlight is the traditional dohyo-iri, in which wrestlers wear kesho-mawashi (ceremonial aprons) and perform the ring-entering ceremony with distinctive movements; their valiant appearance is a sight to see. The event has been carried on by a preservation society and is cherished as an important local cultural asset.
