Mino Matsuri is held as the festival of Hachiman Shrine in Mino City, Gifu Prefecture, every year on the second Saturday of April and the following Sunday. Based at the shrine, about a 15-minute walk from Mino-shi Station on the Nagaragawa Railway, it is a spring event in which each town in the city takes part. The festival consists of three parts: hanamikoshi (flower portable shrines), dashi (festival floats), and nagashi niwaka. On Saturday, fitting for a washi paper-producing area, hanamikoshi decorated with 250 to 300 paper flowers dyed cherry-blossom pink are paraded around, with as many as 30 large and small ones in total, creating a scene as if cherry blossoms were dancing wildly. On Sunday, six gorgeous dashi and parade groups proceed through the city area. Also, from Saturday evening, the Mino Nagashi Niwaka, an improvised comedy play full of satire and wit, is performed by each neighborhood, and a piece with a punchline is presented at the end. The 57th competition is held, and it is a traditional event passed down by each neighborhood as the festival of Hachiman Shrine.
