At Narita-san Shinsho Temple in Narita City, Chiba Prefecture, the Narita-san Setsubun Festival is held every year on February 3, the day before the beginning of spring. It is a traditional event to ward off calamity and pray for happiness throughout the year, centered on the bean-throwing that takes place in front of the Main Hall. At Narita-san's Setsubun, they do not chant "Oni wa soto" (demons out), but rather "Fuku wa uchi! Fuku wa uchi!" (Good fortune in! Good fortune in!). This is because, through the compassion of Fudo Myoo, even evil demons are made to mend their ways. The practice of inviting sumo wrestlers and entertainers as special toshi-otoko (men born in the corresponding zodiac year) began in 1969, the year after the Main Hall completion commemorative event, when cast members of an NHK morning television drama and sumo wrestlers were invited, and it continues today. The main attraction is the "Special Tsuina Bean-Throwing Ceremony," in which yokozuna and taiga drama cast members appear in front of the Main Hall, and in three rounds 860 kg of soybeans, 400 kg of shell-on peanuts, and 365 sword charms per round are thrown. There is also a general-participation "Kaiun Bean-Throwing," in which participants receive goma prayer in the inner hall of the Main Hall, then throw beans before the image of Fudo Myoo to pray for good fortune and prosperity in the coming year.
