The Kazusa Twelve Shrines Festival, held every September in Ichinomiya, Chiba Prefecture, is an autumn tradition centered on Tamazakae Shrine, the first-ranked shrine of Kazusa Province. Taking place at Tsurigasaki Beach, it preserves old traditions as a prefecturally designated intangible folk cultural property. Its origins are said to date back to around 807 AD, giving it a history of about 1,200 years. The shiofumi, in which men carrying a mikoshi (portable shrine) while nearly naked run along the water's edge of the Kujukuri coast, is vigorous, and from this appearance the event is also known by the alternate name Hadaka Matsuri (Naked Festival). At the annual grand festival, a total of nine mikoshi from five shrines gather at the festival site at Tsurigasaki, including Tamazakae Shrine, Minami Shrine in Miyahara, and Tamasaki Shrine in Nakahara, Misaki-cho, Isumi. Offerings of Kazusa kagura and a chigo procession also take place, and the shouts of the carriers and the applause of spectators fill the venue.
