The Hida Kamioka Festival is the collective name for the annual festivals held on the same day at three shrines in Kamioka Town, Hida City, Gifu Prefecture: Ozu Shrine, Hakusan Shrine, and Asaura Hachimangu Shrine. It is one of the three great festivals of Hida, along with the Takayama Festival and the Furukawa Festival, and announces the arrival of spring in Okuhida. The day of the festival is considered the one day a year when the gods come down to the village and process through the town, and households along the route offer sacred sake and other offerings. The highlight is the procession of the departure and return of Ozu Shrine's deity: at noon, a large procession of about 700 people makes its way along Nishisato-dori and Honmachi-dori. Led by Sarutahiko, it continues with lion dancers, kagura, gagaku, torito-gaku, uneme attendants, and small, medium, and large mikoshi (portable shrines), presenting a scene reminiscent of a Heian picture scroll. At the return procession from 7 p.m., the carriers who have paraded through the town all day dance wildly, and the festival reaches its climax as they rush into the grounds of Ozu Shrine in one burst.
