In Oda, Shimane Prefecture, the Oda Higan Market is held on the middle day of the spring equinox and the following day. Stalls selling saplings, farm tools, daily goods, clothing, sundries, and toys line about 1.5 km from in front of JR Oda Station to Honmachi Yotsukado, announcing the arrival of spring in the Iwami region. Its origin is said to date to the Kanei era (1624-1644), when the Yakushi market of Enno Temple and the Inari market of the Inari Shrine on Daikanyama were merged. It was once also called the Kuwai Market or Take Market; at the spring equinox, farm tools were brought from the Bingo, Izumo, and Hoki areas, while bamboo daily goods and cattle and horses were sent out from Oda. After the town system was implemented in 1894 (Meiji 27), an autumn holding also became established, but the spring equinox market is held around the time field work begins, and it is an event so indispensable to the region that it is said spring in the Iwami region begins with the Oda equinox market.
