The Yugawara Yassa Matsuri is a traditional festival held in August in Yugawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, that colors the town's summer. It takes place in the evening hours, with the first day held from in front of Yugawara Elementary School to in front of Sakuragi Park, and the second day held along Makuyama Park Street. Access is convenient, about a 5-minute walk from Yugawara Station on the Tokaido Line. At the center of the festival is a dance in the old orthodox style, performed to the call of "yassa mossaa." In addition to a parade in which mikoshi (portable shrines) and flower-decorated floats proceed through the streets, in recent years a "new song dance version" of the dance has also been performed, and the town comes alive over the two days. As a summer tradition with much to see, where tradition and newness meet, it entertains local people and tourists alike.
