The Yatsushiro Myoken Festival is a traditional event held every year on November 23 as the annual festival of Yatsushiro Shrine (Myoken-gu) in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, designated as a nationally important intangible folk cultural property, and positioned as one of the three major festivals of Kyushu. The centerpiece of the festival is a procession of the deity, which proceeds along a prescribed order and route. At the riverbed at Tazaki, performances are presented, and at the city's "Omatsuri Denden-kan" hall, the "Chibikko Myoken Festival" is held, where children's lion dances and the parading of kasaboko (festival floats) and other events by local children are also highlights.

Getting there

About 20 minutes on foot from Yatsushiro Station on the JR Kagoshima Main Line, or about 5 minutes by taxi. By car, about 15 minutes from the Yatsushiro Interchange on the Kyushu Expressway. Traffic restrictions are in place during the festival.
