Rooms around Takaoka, Toyama fill up while the festival is on.
In the central shopping district of Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, the Takaoka Tanabata Festival is held for eight days from August 1 to 8, timed to the old lunar calendar's Tanabata. Centered on the area just outside Takaoka Station, 1,000 large and small Tanabata decorations color the streets, making this a summer tradition on the largest scale on the Sea of Japan coast. This festival is a traditional event held in August to coincide with the lunar Tanabata, and it is cherished as a representative Takaoka summer event with a long history. Highlights include a giant Tanabata about 10 meters tall, as well as a variety of decorations that enliven the venue, such as wish strips, handmade lanterns, and citizen-participation My Tanabata and Petit Tanabata. During the day, the bamboo decorations stand out against the blue sky; at night, from 18:30, they are illuminated, and the streetcar passing under the Tanabata arch is a unique sight.
