The Tsukurimon Festival is held every year on September 23 and 24 in the town center of Fukuoka, Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. It is a festival with over 300 years of history praying for a bountiful harvest of the five grains. About 40 figures and objects made from vegetables, fruits, grains, seafood, and other materials are displayed at various locations around the town. The festival originated in the mid-Edo period as an offering of harvested crops to the Jizo festival. Later, an event featuring crafted objects was added and it came to be held in September. Even now, on the same days, Jizo festivals are held at three Jizo halls in the district, carrying on the tradition. The highlights are the tsukurimon (crafted figures), made using the textures and colors of the ingredients, ranging from large pieces over 5 or 6 meters tall to smaller works, with themes such as topical figures, satire, historical figures, and local scenery. During the festival, various events are also held, including lantern floating on the Kishito River, performances of gagaku (court music), wind bands, and folk songs, and a tsukurimon contest.
