The Ikuji Taimatsu Festival, held on November 1 and 2 in Kurobe, Toyama Prefecture, is a local traditional event at Shinji Shrine. Known as a strange festival for the power of the children's festival music and the flames of torches, it features a procession through town carrying a float with Ebisu, the god of fishing, and Daikoku, the god of agriculture and commerce, followed by a mikoshi (portable shrine) heading to Shinji Shrine. The climax is a nighttime ritual in which about 300 torches lined up along the approach to Shinji Shrine burn brightly. Around midnight, men in their unlucky years run through the fiery path with the cry "Otatcho!"—meaning the gods are departing—and dedicate the mikoshi to the shrine. Children from fourth grade onward join in with lively music, adding to the festival and letting visitors experience its unique heat.
