Every year on February 20 and March 2, Suribachiyaito is held at Chudoin in Chosenji-cho, Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture. It is a kaji secret rite (a esoteric blessing ritual) originating with Genzan Daishi. The name comes from the goma furnace that ascetic monks wear on their heads, which resembles a suribachi (mortar). The practice dates back to a kaji secret rite that Genzan Daishi began in order to save common people suffering from epidemic disease. Since ancient times it has been believed to have miraculous efficacy against headaches and various other ailments, and in recent years it has also drawn attention for the benefit of 'becoming smarter,' attracting students preparing for entrance exams, so it is familiar for both prayers for health and academic success.

Getting there

The nearest station is JR Kitasabae Station, about a 25-minute walk. Alternatively, get off at the 'Chudoin-mae' stop on the Sabae City loop bus and it is immediately there.
